Hokkaido in summer is the anti-Tokyo. While the rest of Japan sweats through 35 degrees and humidity that makes your clothes stick to your body, Hokkaido sits at 20-26 degrees with low humidity and a breeze off the sea. This alone is why millions of Japanese tourists head north every July and August.
In This Article
For international visitors, summer Hokkaido offers something different from the powder snow and drift ice that get all the attention. Lavender fields turn hillsides purple, hiking trails open across volcanic highlands, and the longest daylight hours in Japan mean you can pack a lot into each day.
What Makes Summer Special
The Flowers
Hokkaido flower season runs from late May through September. Lavender peaks in mid-July at Farm Tomita in Furano — rows of purple climbing a hillside with mountains behind. But the entire central region blooms with poppies, sunflowers, salvia, and wildflowers across a rolling patchwork landscape.
Shikisai no Oka in Biei plants strips of different flowers creating rainbow bands across the hills. Hokuryu Sunflower Village (August) has 1.5 million sunflowers across 23 hectares. Full details in our Furano and Biei guide.
The Climate
Sapporo averages 21-26 degrees in July and August with low humidity. Compare that to Tokyo at 30-35 degrees with suffocating humidity. June is often the driest and most pleasant month. September cools quickly — by late September, you reach for a jacket in the evenings.
The Light
At Hokkaido latitude (43 degrees N, similar to southern France), summer daylight runs from around 4:00 AM to 7:30 PM in June. Sunrise over the Sea of Okhotsk, sunset over the Japan Sea, and plenty of light for photography at both ends.
Best Summer Activities
Hiking
Daisetsuzan National Park — Japan largest national park — opens its high-altitude trails from July. The Asahidake Ropeway lifts you to 1,600 metres where alpine wildflower meadows stretch across the volcanic plateau. Trails lead to the summit (2,291m) or across the Susoaidaira Plateau.
For something easier, the Shiretoko Five Lakes boardwalk offers forest walking with views of the Shiretoko mountain range reflected in the lakes.
Cycling
Biei patchwork road area is ideal for cycling — rolling but not steep, with farm roads connecting viewpoints. Rental shops in Biei provide regular bikes, electric-assist, and kids bikes. A half-day covers the main route; a full day adds the panorama course.
Rafting and Water Sports
White-water rafting on the Sorachi River near Furano runs April through October. Family-friendly sections suit children from age 3-4. Kushiro Marshland canoeing lets you paddle through Japan largest wetland watching wildlife from water level.
Shakotan Peninsula on the western coast has some of the clearest water in Japan — sea kayaking through rocky coastline with caves is a highlight.
Whale Watching
From Rausu on the eastern Shiretoko Peninsula, tours spot orcas (May-July) and sperm whales (July-September). Less accessible than Utoro but the marine wildlife is more dramatic.
Festivals
- Yosakoi Soran Festival (Sapporo, June) — teams of dancers in colourful costumes perform choreographed routines through the city streets
- Otaru Ushio Festival (late July) — fireworks over the harbour, food stalls
- Hokkaido Shrine Festival (Sapporo, mid-June) — traditional festival with food stalls and parade
What to Skip in Summer
- Niseko — the ski resort without snow is pleasant but unremarkable. Not worth a special trip in summer.
- Peak lavender weekends — mid-July weekends at Farm Tomita are genuinely crowded. Go weekday or arrive before 9 AM.
Accommodation Tips
Summer is the second most expensive season (after Snow Festival week). Furano and Biei book out weeks ahead for peak lavender (early-mid July). Shiretoko has limited rooms. Book 2-3 months ahead for July-August.
Hotel picks: Sapporo, Niseko, Hakodate, Kitami.
