Hokkaido is not marketed as a romantic destination, which is precisely what makes it one. There are no heart-shaped swimming pools or couples massage packages with rose petals. What there is: private outdoor hot springs overlooking snow-covered mountains, dinner courses built around the freshest seafood you have ever eaten, and winter landscapes so quiet that you can hear snow falling.

The romance in Hokkaido is in the quality of the experience, not the packaging.
The Best Romantic Experiences
Private Onsen (Kashikiri Buro)

Many ryokans and upscale hotels offer private hot spring baths that you reserve for 45-60 minutes. Some higher-end rooms come with their own private outdoor bath (rotenburo) on the balcony. Soaking together in natural hot spring water, looking at mountains or falling snow, with nobody else around — this is the signature Hokkaido couples experience.
Best locations for private onsen:
- Noboribetsu: Several ryokans offer private baths with sulphur-rich water. See our Noboribetsu guide.
- Jozankei: Close to Sapporo, with autumn foliage views from private baths. See our Jozankei guide.
- Lake Toya: Lake-view private baths at several hotels. See our Lake Toya guide.
- Kawayu Onsen (eastern Hokkaido): Quieter, more remote, with strong sulphur water. See our eastern Hokkaido guide.

Ryokan Dinner (Kaiseki)

A traditional multi-course Japanese dinner served in your room or a private dining area. Each course is small, beautiful, and seasonal — typically 8-12 courses over 90 minutes. In Hokkaido, the courses lean heavily on local ingredients: crab, uni, scallops, Hokkaido beef, and seasonal vegetables. A bottle of local sake to share elevates it further.
Kaiseki is included in the rate at most ryokans (Japanese inns). Expect to pay 15,000-40,000 yen per person for room + dinner + breakfast at a good ryokan.
Winter Night Drives
Driving through a Hokkaido snowscape at night — headlights illuminating snowflakes, forest on both sides, complete silence when you stop the car — is unexpectedly romantic. The drive from Sapporo to Jozankei through the river valley, or the coastal road between Otaru and Yoichi, takes on a different character in the dark.
Stop at an onsen or a small restaurant along the way. The combination of cold outside and warmth inside creates a cosiness that summer cannot match.
Food Experiences
- Sushi omakase in Otaru: Chef-selected course at a small counter-service sushi restaurant. Intimate, personalised, and the fish is exceptional. See our Otaru guide.
- Jingisukan for two: Grilling Hokkaido lamb together at your table is surprisingly fun as a couple activity. The Sapporo Beer Garden does this with all-you-can-eat/drink packages. See our craft beer guide.
- Morning market breakfast (Hakodate): Walking through the 5 AM market, choosing seafood for your breakfast bowl, eating at a counter while the city wakes up. See our Hakodate guide.
