Three days is not a lot for an island the size of Hokkaido, but it is enough to get a real taste if you plan it right. The key is staying in Sapporo (the transport hub) and making smart day trips rather than trying to cover too much ground. Rushing between cities on a 3-day trip wastes your limited time on trains and highways.

The Route
| Day | Location | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sapporo | Arrive, explore city, food |
| 2 | Otaru day trip | Canal, sushi, glass shops |
| 3 | Wildcard + depart | Choose your adventure (see options below) |
Day 1: Arrive and Explore Sapporo
Morning/Afternoon: Fly into New Chitose Airport. Take the JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo Station (37 minutes, 1,150 yen). Check into your hotel — we recommend staying near the station for maximum convenience. See our Sapporo Station hotels.
Afternoon: Walk the underground shopping street south from the station to Odori Park. If the weather is good, walk above ground through the city grid. Stop at Sapporo TV Tower for the view (1,000 yen) or skip it and keep walking to Tanukikoji covered arcade for browsing.
Evening: This is your best food evening. Two options:
- Ramen: Head to Susukino and hit Ramen Yokocho or one of the shops in our ramen guide. Miso ramen is the Sapporo signature.
- Soup curry: Sapporo invented this dish. Spiced curry broth with chicken and vegetables. See our soup curry guide.
After dinner, walk through Susukino to see the neon and feel the energy. For craft beer options, see our nightlife guide.
Day 2: Otaru Day Trip
Morning: JR train to Otaru (32 minutes, 750 yen from Sapporo). The train follows the coast — sit on the left side for ocean views.
In Otaru:
- Walk the canal district. Photos of the stone warehouses and gas lamps take 20 minutes.
- Sushi lunch at one of the harbour restaurants. Skip the ones with touts outside and find a quieter counter-service shop.
- Browse Sakaimachi Street — glass shops, the Music Box Museum, and LeTAO cheesecake (buy a double fromage to eat immediately, buy a frozen one for home at the airport).
- Optional: Otaru Beer brewery in a canal-side warehouse. Good pilsner and dunkel, nice terrace in summer.
Evening: Return to Sapporo (last train approximately 23:00). Dinner at an izakaya in Susukino — try jingisukan (grilled Hokkaido lamb on a dome-shaped grill). See our food guide.
Full details in our Otaru day trip guide.
Day 3: Wildcard Morning + Depart
Your flight determines how much you can do. If departing in the evening, you have a full morning plus early afternoon. Pick one:
Option A: Jozankei Onsen (45 min from Sapporo)
Hot spring town in a river gorge. Take the morning bus, soak in an outdoor bath for an hour, eat lunch, return by early afternoon. Best in autumn (October foliage). See our Jozankei guide.
Option B: Nijo Market + Sapporo Beer Museum
Walk to Nijo Market for a seafood breakfast (uni-don, grilled scallops). Then cab or walk to the Sapporo Beer Museum for the tour and a jingisukan + beer lunch at the beer garden. Cover two Sapporo essentials in one morning.
Option C: Shiroi Koibito Park
The chocolate factory tour + cookie decorating workshop. Good for families or sweet-toothed visitors. Subway to Miyanosawa (20 minutes from centre). Allow 2 hours.
Option D: Last-Minute Shopping
Spend the morning at Sapporo Station department stores or Tanukikoji arcade picking up souvenirs. Then head to the airport early and use the airport’s excellent food court and shops. See our souvenir guide and airport guide.
Departing: JR Rapid Airport from Sapporo Station (37 min). Allow 2 hours before domestic flights, 3 hours before international.

Can You See More in 3 Days?
You could replace the Otaru day trip with Furano/Biei (lavender fields, Blue Pond) if you rent a car, but it is a 2-hour drive each way and eats into your limited time. For 3 days without a car, Sapporo + Otaru is the smartest use of time.
If you have more time, see our 7-day itinerary or 10-day circuit.
